CARA
Dr. John Chattin-McNIchols is preparing catechists to use Teacher Action Research originally developed for Montessori environments in the CGS community. He will introduce the history and method of this very practical approach to researching and refining our work in the coming years. Our goal is to continue to be as critical and thoughtful of our developing work as Sofia and Gianna and Maria Montessori were with theirs.

To Love and Understand the Universe
The Cosmic Story can be overwhelming, but if we set the broad strokes first, we have a framework for learning more over our lifetimes. Ms. Morgan will give an overview of five dazzling truths about the universe and the most important thresholds of its story. Awe, wonder and love of the Cosmos naturally follow.  She will also show how Cosmic Education and a deep time perspective can become a lens for looking at everything.

Gianna Gobbi
Gianna Gobbi's contribution to children and the development of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd was significant and yet like she was with children, her presence (in some respects) was unobstrusive. We'll get to know Gianna, her gifts as a catechist, and the gifts she brought to the collaboration she had with Sofia through the work of CGS. We'll also consider how Gianna helps us better understand our role as catechists.

Helping “spiritual but not religious” families understand the need and resources for children’s spiritual lives
Recent studies show a startling increase in anxiety and depression in children and teens. Families outside the church are searching for spiritual resources. How do we make the case for the importance of spiritual nurture? What language can we use that doesn’t scare parents who are cautious about the church? What experiences and resources might invite them in?

The Cosmic Task of Building Bridges

In the last two years, there has been a global rise in nationalism, particularly as manifested in the twin concepts of religious and racial puritanism. The current debate about border security and immigration, not to mention the violence that it has spawned, is a direct result of the rise in white supremacy. We have heard many chants and calls for building “the wall.”
As people who embrace the Gospel’s call to unity and love, we have an obligation to help build bridges, not walls. As catechists who believe that the work of forging peace is begun with the youngest child with continuing formation through adolescence, we have an obligation to guide children and youth to an understanding of the Gospel mandate to love one another as a mandate to be radically open to “the other,” whoever that “other” might be. I would like to explore the many resources that we have in the Level II and Level III atria that can aid us as we facilitate the breaking down of the walls that seek to separate us, and building the bridges that will lead future generations to be more welcoming of “the other.” In recognizing the brokenness of humankind, we come together with the children to seek to heal this brokenness within ourselves and in our world, with humility, grace and hope. This is the cosmic task that awaits us all.

Storytelling Workshop - The Great Lessons as Great Stories
Maria Montessori and her son Mario, as well as Sofia Cavalletti, were adamant about the importance of storytelling as the way to light the fire of passionate learning. But so many teachers are hesitant to try out different ways of expressing themselves through story.  This session will model and explore different kinds of storytelling and help you to find your own unique style and storytelling voice.

Nonviolence: Method and Content in CGS
This reflection builds on Sofia Cavalletti's directive that "the method should match the content" in CGS. When we turn our attention to Gospel nonviolence, we have both the content (preaching and example of Jesus) and the method (of parables and signs) to work with. Our atrium work and Gospel nonviolence demand that we be attentive and true to both.

In this session we’ll link the outer Cosmic Story with inner experience and theology.  We’ll discuss Thomas Berry’s twelve principles for encountering the divine within the cosmos; themes of differentiation, interiority, and communion; how our work of expanding communion is a principle of both the cosmic and theological stories; and wondrous place of the child within the bigger picture of creation, redemption and parousia.
